US Water Score aggregates publicly available water quality data from the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS), the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR5) for PFAS, and enforcement records. We analyze data from over 96,000 community water systems serving 300+ million Americans. Data was last updated in March 2026.
Each ZIP code is scored 0–100 using a weighted algorithm: violation count and severity (log-scaled, 30% weight), lead 90th percentile levels vs. EPA action level of 15 ppb (25% weight), copper 90th percentile levels vs. 1,300 ppb action level (10% weight), PFAS detections and MCL exceedances from UCMR5 data (20% weight), and enforcement actions (15% weight). Letter grades map as: A (85–100), B (70–84), C (55–69), D (35–54), F (0–34). ZIP codes are linked to water systems via EPA geographic area records, UCMR5 ZIP crosswalk, and Census ZCTA boundary files.
